Last night after our special crazy museum night in Amsterdam, we made coffee and talked nonsense from 3 a.m. All of a sudden out of nowhere, I realized one simple but apparent fact : what we have been taught in school are mostly useless garbage.
This is an old topic I know. Intellectual elites always criticize about the education systems in their countries. But I see it slightly different for my case. What I have for my vision is very specific. Basically, we have wasted a lot of our precious time in primary school, junior school, high school and college studying many things less important for our entire life and future or the knowledge we don't need at all once we graduate. We each individual actually indeed need a lot of real education, which are foundamentally necessary:
1. SWIMMING: yes, swimming is not an elective class, it is your life when you encounter massive water.
2. COOKING: not for girls to become housewives. Food is not just what we deal with every day, but also an art. Cooking definitely should play a big role in our lifetime, for physical needs and appreciation of life.
3. FARMING: probably you despise planting crops as much as you disgust peasants. Probably it is never a compulsory task in your city life. That is because we are so corrupted parasite lifestyle. Knowing how to farm is not just to supply our daily needs. It provides us nutrition to our mental health.
4. CONSTRUCTION: here I mean to build house. Don't you have a second to think about your life? You study hard, work hard, save money hard, just for being able to afford a house? And the governments and the rich businessmen always price up the market. We end up as a slave. If so, why can't we just learn how to build a house? If we can master calculus, of course we can handle cement! Plus we can always ask for help from the experts.
5. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT: music is expression without face. To grasp any musical instrument will make ourselves different, and happier. It is a way we can directly express and communicate, not a money making skill.
6. PROGRAMMING: we can all use computer. Really? Programmers are like the drivers who are capable of fixing their cars. If we can learn computer language, we can control better, and create more.
7. MATHEMATIC: mathematic is the root of logic and science. Needless to say, this is maybe the only one course that should remain in school system.
Ok, very possibly I miss some important must-learn courses. And you may not agree with my list. However, to rethink and re-evaluate our existing education institution is extremely valuable and no wonder under-estimated. Our education now doesn't tell us how to be a happy man BECAUSE IT INITIALLY DOESN'T WANT TO!
